The Importance of a Romantic Getaway

For most of us, the idea of getting away with your significant other on a regular basis is a luxury—one that’s really tough to make time for. But a recent survey conducted by the US Travel Association revealed that romantic travel experiences are key to achieving healthy, resilient and long-lasting relationships.

“Couples who travel together have healthier, happier relationships compared to those who do not.” According to the survey, “Couples in a romantic relationship report traveling together makes them significantly more likely to be satisfied in their relationships, communicate well with their partners, enjoy more romance, have a better sex life, spend quality time together and share common goals and desires.”

The survey asked couples to rate their relationships based on several factors, ALL of which were rated higher by couples who travel together. Relationships among traveling couples lasted longer and enjoyed lower divorce rates. The survey also found that couples who travel together experience greater satisfaction with their relationships than couples who do not. The survey concluded that travel not only “ignites romance and intimacy”, but also “helps build and maintain relationships.”

Couples who travel together also reported more of these positive views of their relationships:

they share similar goals and desires

they have shared hobbies and interests

they agree on how to spend money

they laugh and have fun together

they handle differences well

How long has it been since you enjoyed even a weekend getaway with your significant other? I know I’m guilty. There are anniversaries where we are so busy that we don’t even bother to try, or I feel bad asking for help with the kids so I can join my husband on a business trip for a few days. But after reading this survey, I think I will make a more concerted effort to prioritize those escapes—even if they are short.

Is it time to plan your next romantic retreat? I've got some great inspiration for you on my website—come check out a sample itinerary.
